Stops naming guidelines

Stops naming guidelines

Background

In the distribution ecosystem, a large amount of information is shared and exchanged, including data from various inventory systems. This information is presented to customers when they purchase a trip or use tickets during their journey.

To ensure consistent and clear communication with customers, it is crucial that stop names are homogeneous and uniform across the distribution ecosystem. By adhering to a common standard, the risk of misunderstandings is reduced, and the user experience is improved.

This is a guideline for how names for stops should be used.

Responsibility

Samtrafiken is responsible for naming the National stops (Rikshållplatser) used for ticket sales in Sweden.
Each regional authority is responsible for naming the local stops used within their region.
When Samtrafiken links a local stop to a National stop, it will update the stop name in Samtrafiken stops register to ensure it meets the national standard.

Carriers with their own inventory systems are responsible for naming the stops within those systems.

Guidelines for stop naming

The following rules describe how to structure stop names depending on their context and location.

Location names as part of stop names

If the location name is a natural part of the stop name, it should come first, following the naming standard:

  • Vårdinge kyrka

  • Barkarby skola

  • Sunderby sjukhus

  • Ekeby vägskäl

Location names for reference only

If the location is within a town or urban area, place the location name first:

  • Strängnäs Bäckvägen

  • Norrtälje Kustvägen

  • Askersund Landskyrkan

  • Arvika Kyrkebyskolan

  • Älvkarleö Lanforsens vägskäl

If the location is outside the urban area but nearby, place the location name last:

  • Stora Vika Nynäshamn

  • Ängsö Västerås

  • Norråker Strömsund

How to use abbreviations

Use an abbreviation when space is limited.
An abbreviation is normally written in lowercase.

Exceptions include:

  • Central, which is abbreviated as C (capitalized, no period).

  • Cardinal directions (e.g. N, S, Ö, V) which are written with a capital letter and a period.

Examples:

  • br (Brygga)

  • hpl Hållplats)

  • C (Central)

  • V (Västra)
